“One must analyze the word faith and see that it can mean two completely opposite things.” — Francis A. Schaeffer
In his book, He Is There and He Is Not Silent, Francis Schaeffer, explores two distinct interpretations of faith through the vivid metaphor of a perilous Alpine climb. This video short illustrates the "leap of faith" as an act of blind desperation versus a faith that involves seeking verification and asks questions before committing to an action, even in a desperate situation. Atheists frequently accuse Christians of having a blind faith. In contrast, this 4 minute video illustration teaches students that evidence-based faith better aligns with the historic Christian teaching. The Bible teaches us that faith is not a blind leap into nothingness but an invitation to inquire and understand. Ultimately, as Schaeffer points out, these two concepts of faith are so fundamentally different they should not even share the same terminology.
This video short closes with two helpful questions to promote small-group discussion.
How would you define the two kinds of “faith” demonstrated in this story? How are they different? How are they the same?
Of the two kinds of “faith,” which one reflects the kind of faith encouraged in the Bible? Support your answer with an example.
