Christmas is a celebration of light of Christ come into our world. As followers of Christ, we are to be the light of Christ to the world. So how might Einstein’s theory of relativity, time dilation, and the observer effect, impact our understanding of Ephesians 5:13–21 and what it means for the believer live at the speed of light?1
Sermon Outline
A 2009 study from Japan shows that the human body glows, emitting a visible light 1,000 times less intense than the levels to which our naked eyes can see and at levels that rise and fall with the day
1. Light Transforms Life
Eph. 5:13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”
2. Light Multiplies Time
Eph. 5:15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time (redeeming the time), because the days are evil.
3. Light Recognizes Light
Eph. 5:17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
4. Light is Influenced by the Observer
a. The FIRST observer is the Spirit
18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
b. The SECOND observer is the Church
19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
5. Application
Becoming light = submission to Christ and AND submission to the church.
The light must not be concealed = don’t let culture intimidate you into silence
The light must not be tarnished by politics = vote, but remember you are light
What can you accomplish for Christ if your time is multiplied as you live at the speed of light?
Message from December 2019 at Pathways Community Church in Santee, CA.
