They have the earth in their hands, who have nothing of heaven in their hearts; they bear sway in the world who are slaves to the world; they govern and order others at their will who are led captive by Satan at his will. Be not offended and troubled to see the reins of government in their hands who know not how to govern themselves, or to see them rule the world who are unworthy to live in the world.— Joseph Hall
We live in tumultuous times and many of our political and religious leaders are profiting from the fear of future instability.
Have you found yourself watching the news and giving in to despair of what you see?
Have you listened to those voices that breed fear in your heart?
There is hope. Our lives, as followers of Jesus, are not tied to the success or failure of any one government, one political party, one candidate, one system of justice, or any one system of economics.
No matter what happens in this election cycle… no matter which leaders come into power… God is in charge! The followers of YHWH will always thrive.
I wrote the following poem as a reminder of my hope in Christ which is greater than the system of human government under which I live.
Governments rise and kingdoms fall
Institutions demand we sacrifice all
Still we bow to the Savior’s call…
We thrive as disciples of Jesus!
Dictators come and take our power
Freedom fades with every hour
The Spirit brings our faith to flower…
We thrive as disciples of Jesus!
Democracy asks that all men give
Laws tame our faith like the slaver’s gyve
In Christ’s full freedom still we live…
We thrive as disciples of Jesus!
Socialism rules in the guise of compassion
The common good leaves faces ashen
Our service to God we must not ration…
We thrive as disciples of Jesus!
Anarchy decrees through ascent to fear
Freedom rejoices at the Government’s bier
The church as family makes God’s rule clear…
We thrive as disciples of Jesus!
Governments rise and kingdoms fall
Institutions demand I sacrifice all
Still I bow to the Savior’s call…
I thrive as a disciple of Jesus!
