Several years ago when I was planting a church, I attended a service from one of my good friends Jim. The message he shared that day was out of Revelation 3 and spoke right to the heart of my turbulent life.
“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this: ‘I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a little power, and have kept My word, and have not denied My name. ‘Behold, I will cause those of the Synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—I will make them come and bow down at your feet, and make them know that I have loved you (Revelation 3:7-9, NASB95).
God is the God of doors; some doors He opens and some doors he shuts, but no one can counter what God has ordained. If God has called you to lead a local church then God has opened a door for you to spread the Gospel and that open door is a promise from our brother Jesus that nothing can stop us from succeeding.
Here are five observations from this passage.
Divine opportunities are lost when plans are made without consulting God.
Divine opportunities aren’t measured by the abundance or lack of material resources.
Divine opportunities are often disguised as hard work.
Divine opportunities always come with opposition from Satan and the world.
Divine opportunities often look impossible.
I remember that by the end of the service I was fighting back tears as I weighed the power of these verses against the giant trials my wife and I were facing. God was speaking hope in the midst of trial. God was telling me,
“There are some impossible opportunities coming your way!”
That is the message God had for me all those years ago when I began church planting and he was always faithful to his word. The message from Revelation struck to the heart of where we I was in my walk with Jesus and it still has meaning for my crazy life today.
Our Heavenly Father has some impossible opportunities coming your way, will you walk through the open door?
