Ep 20: The Genealogical Adam and Eve

An Interview with S. Joshua Swamidass

Dr. Miller goes back in time to 2019 when he went 1 on 1 with author S. Joshua Swamidass to discussed his book, The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry. The book makes the case that Universal Genealogical Ancestry (UGA) resolves the perceived conflict between creationists and evolutionists. UGA, writes Swamidass, allows for both God's direct creation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden cir. 10,000 years ago and the theory of Common Descent (CD) which posits humans evolved from lower animals over billions of years. This interview came early on in my own studies and before my PhD work was finished so my goal for the conversation was one of clarity rather than critique. You can read more of my later analysis at www.morethancake.org.

TODAY’S GUEST

S Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD, is a physician, scientist, and founder of Peaceful Science. He is Associate Professor of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University in Saint Louis where he runs a computational biology group using artificial intelligence to explore science at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and medicine.

UPDATE

At around 28 minutes into the interview, Swamidass defines the humans outside the garden. Five years later, this December 2024 post on X clarifies where he lands on this view today. Whether this is a shift in Swamidass’ view, or refinement of his language is unclear to me.
